Our Studio

Tian Taru is a natural dye studio nestled in the jungles of Payangan, Bali. Surrounded by our own indigo plantation, we grow, harvest, process, and dye — controlling every stage of production from plant to finished textile.

The studio was established from a conviction that the ancient craft of natural indigo dyeing deserves not just preservation but evolution. We honour traditional techniques while constantly experimenting — pushing the boundaries of what natural indigo can achieve in colour, texture, and form.

Our practice is rooted in sustainability. Every element of our process — from the organic cultivation of our indigo plants to the natural fermentation of our dye vats — works in harmony with the environment. The studio itself is designed to minimise its footprint, using natural ventilation, rainwater harvesting, and solar energy.

Our Team

With four decades of combined experience in natural dye and textile design, our team brings together deep traditional knowledge and contemporary creative vision. We are artisans, growers, teachers, and designers — united by a shared passion for indigo and the belief that handmade textiles carry a quality that no machine can replicate.

Our Balinese artisans bring generations of textile knowledge, while our designers contribute an international perspective on colour, form, and application. Together, we create work that is both deeply rooted in tradition and entirely of its time.
